Tribal Tattoos

Tribal Tattoo 1

During ancient times tribal tattoos were primarily a symbol of identity for tribes. They were also used to express religion and spiritualism. Some tribes used tattoos for camouflage to hide themselves in the forests.

Modern tribal tattoo designs usually derive from Aztec, Polynesian, Samoan, Egyptian, Indian, Mayan, Hawaiian and Maori styles. These tribes use tattoo designs for social status, identification, and even medicinal purposes.

The word 'tattoo' is derived from the Polynesian word 'tatau'. All inhabitants of Marquesan island in Polynesia were tattooed. They consider these symbols to be a form of language. Often these tattoo designs are inspired by animals.

The Maori tribe of New Zealand have facial tattoos which represent their inner strength and are used to differentiate each other. The Maori tribe believe that when you die light will shine brightly through you and the tattoo would show who you are.

The Indian tribe was called the Haida, who inhabited the Northwest coast of America. The Haidan tribal tattoo styles are very similar to their wood carvings of beavers, bears, fish, etc. This is because they held the belief that certain tattoos allow you to partly take on the strength of the animal.

The Borneo tribe is situated above Indonesia. Their tribal tattoo designs were a symbol of protection and proof of achievement. Their design usually depicted flowers, dragons, scorpions, dogs or spirals. The colors are usually bold with simple colouring.

Modern tribal designs can also include angels, fairies or butterflies, Chinese characters or Kanji, stars, etc. There really is not limit for creativity where tribal tattoos are concerned. A defining feature of tribal tattoos is that it usually has thick lines and is dominated by or fully black and white in color. The design can be as simple or as complex as you like, nothing is considered wrong when designing tribal tattoos.
